Mission Beach Safe Boat Harbour
( 569 local and interstate submissions received up to May 2012 - see Comments pages for details ).

This web site has been put together by the management committees of Mission Beach Business and Tourism, Mission Beach Safe Boating Committee and Mission Beach local residents. We represent a significant portion of the Mission Beach and surrounding communities and support the construction of a Safe Boat Harbour at Mission Beach.

We are committed to the below charter that clearly states what we believe is needed in Mission Beach. We believe the charter is consistent with the culture of Mission Beach and represents the minimum marine infrastructure required to see the Mission Beach and regional economy/community grow and prosper.

We are not marine developers and as such do not have a specific Safe Boat Harbour design that we are supporting.

We are highly conscious of the need to get the limited facilities that we had in Mission Beach before TC Yasi back so commercial operators can get back to work. What ever needs to be done to see these businesses up and going should be done immediately.

Our Charter:

Mission Beach needs a Safe Boat Harbour that;

1) Provides safe anchorage for local and passing vessels in poor weather, and wet berthing of Commercial, Recreational, and visiting vessels.

2) Offers safe fueling in all weather
3) Uses best practice in all elements of the Harbourside design and environmental impact.
4) Allows the loading and unloading of passengers safely in all weather
5) Safe loading of provisions and equipment in all weather.
6) Improves recreational and commercial boat ramp facilities incorporating trailer parking solution.
7) Provides clear areas for recreational and commercial users to operate without conflict.
8) Provides a facility for the Coast Guard, as well as other regulatory/ compliance authorities.
9) Provides a designated area for barge access all year round. This will allow the region to supply the needs of both Dunk and Bedarra Islands.
10) Provide an area/s for community amenity, ie BBQ's, fishing.
11) Provide appropriate tourism facilities such as transfer station for tourists, including change rooms, bathrooms, and limited retail convenience (Bait/ice/tackle etc)
12) Provide for a community style "Club facility " for combined yachting, fishing, marine training and social gathering.
13) We support the the marine infrastructure upgrades for both Dunk and Bedarra Island, as these tourism assets are an integral part of the Mission Beach and the Cassowary Coast Tourism node.

What we believe the Mission Beach Safe Boat Harbour does NOT need;

1) Slipways, Gantry Cranes, and large scale industrial marine infrastructure. These services are available in Innisfail and Hinchinbrook.

2) Unnecessary retail space
3) Unnecessary high rise/unit development
4) More than 2 story building Mass
5) To change the character of Mission Beach

Show Your Support;

Supporting the above charter, will assist in lobbying all three levels of Government to actively begin the Management Plan process. The Management Plan is required before any proposals can be considered for approval. The Management Plan must be commissioned by the Government and will review the Social, Economic and Environmental impacts of a Safe Boat Harbour.

For too long, the Mission Beach and regional communities have suffered for the lack of Marine Infrastructure. It is time we as a community stood together and united on this issue that is critical to the wellbeing of our economy and in turn community.

Our tourism based economy desperately needs better infrastructure. Low key, but critical infrastructure, will underpin existing employment in the town. It will provide the impetus for new employment due to an increase in the number of tourists visiting the area, as well extending the length of stay which in turn has a positive impact on all businesses that rely on tourism. It will allow our commercial operators to compete on a level playing field with other Great Barrier Reef tourism based towns. It will allow recreational boaties to clean, refuel, and most importantly load and unload family and friends safely.
